KANO – No fewer than 4000 new blocks of classrooms under construction across 44 local government areas of Kano state lack provision for toilets, and lavatories.
A random survey of newly constructed classroom blocks by Daily INDEPENDENT across Kano’s three senatorial zones reveals alarming omissions of sanitary facilities, sparking concerns about public health.
At Sabon Layi primary school, Bichi, that has a population 1764 students, 39 teachers, 26 Permanent staff 4 casual, temporary 10, and 7 volunteers struggled with 4 pit toilets.
Auwalu Abubakar Badudu, the Head Teacher told Daily INDEPENDENT that most of lavatories have been abandoned, we have 4 active ones shared between the teaching staff, and students.
The situations are the same across 4 other schools visited in Kano North senatorial District, which includes Lambo Bank primary school Tofa, and Dawakin Tofa Model primary school.
Finding revealed that the new blocks designed to accommodate several out of school children would overstretched the existing facilities across board.
Addressing concerns on absence of toilets in the new blocks, one of the Contractors handling Dawakin Tofa, Arc Gali Bichi, said “we are working on agreed specifications with the state government.
Bichi said “Contractors handling these special projects are executing a uniform design that was made available to us by the government, and it out of our contractual agreement to add new to it.
