5 political parties set for Kwara LG elections

All is set for the election of chairmen and councilors into the 16 local government areas of Kwara state scheduled to hold  Saturday, September 21, as announced by the Kwara State Independent Electoral  Commission (KWSIEC).

The election is coming 5 years after a council election was held to install democratically elected chairmen and councilors in the state. 

The state chairman of KWSIEC, Dr Baba Okonla, had at a forum  organised by the Kwara state council of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) announced that five political parties would participate in the election. 

He listed the parties to include: All Progressives Congress (APC,) Peoples Democratic Party (PDP,) All Peoples Movement (APM,) Social Democratic Party (SDP) and Accord Party (AP.).

“I am pleased to announce that the commission has carefully crafted a comprehensive time table for the forthcoming local government elections to ensure that all stakeholders are adequately prepared for the electoral process.

“The local government elections are scheduled to take place on 21st September, 2024. Polling units will open by 8.00am and voting will be concluded by 3.00pm  after which sorting, counting and collation of results will begin. Announcement of results will be collated at the designated collation centres and announced after counting is concluded,” KWASIEC chairman said.

Also on Thursday, the state commandant  of the  Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Dr. Umar Mohammed directed the deployment of  3,000 personnel across the 16 local government to ensure a hitch free polls.

Similarly, the Commissioner of Police, Kwara state command, Victor Olaiya, has assured residents that the command in collaboration with heads of security agencies in the state has made thorough security arrangements to guarantee peaceful, free, and fair process across all polling units in the state.
